More Holidays and opportunities for panic

Z and I are in the process of trying to book a holiday for the end of August which is at the moment complicated and anguished and making me think that I'd prefer to go to Croatia where I know we'll have a roof over our heads [major tectonic activity and tidal waves excepted of course].

But instead we're going to the South of France, for five more days than we currently have accomodation for which is making me a little knot of anxiety. Although I, on the whole, think the French are splendid, my experience of French providers of cheap-but-decent accomodation is nowhere near so positive and I consider them weasels of the lowest order and the concept of We'll be sleeping on the beach, Keeping Oceans Within Reach is only romantic in the Over The Rhine song because in real life beach at night gets bloody cold and the sand gets everywhere. Plus we'd probably get set on by vagabonds, it being Nice.

Please Mr. strange_powers do you know if there are any long term parking facilities at Luton airport, and if so how much they might cost? - never mind, all resolved thanks to the magic of the internet!

Hurrah! Thanks to an hour of telephony and a mad burst of organisational skills, we appear to have booked and sorted out the whole thing.
Flying out on 25th of August, spending two nights in a hotel in Cannes, then on the 27th meeting up with friends of Z's and sharing self-catering accomodation in Cannes until the 3rd of September, and then going on to Nice for two more nights in some cheap 1 star hole of a hotel. As long as the room contains a bed and a door, and an access to a bathroom and no rats I'm really not fussed, although I'm a little bit apprehensive I must admit. In case I vanish off the face of the earth then I suggest people look into asking the management of Hotel Acarthe some pointed questions.

There are two downsides for me. One - going to france will make it more difficult for me to spend part of my holiday in Yugoslavia. I had been really looking forward to going to Montenegro for a bit to spend time with my family, and the sun, which would have been easily done from Croatia but much more difficult to achieve from Nice. Also, I'll have to stretch my annual leave quite a bit further and I'm not sure how I'll manage to juggle the time off from my team which has recently lost another team member.

I am looking forward to spending time with Z and french food, but I'm a bit wary of being immersed in a group of his friends [yet he has survived my family, i'm sure I'll manage with his mates] and I'm bored of going to France [especially because the south of france is a bit dirty and full of skanks]. However, he was keen on going and I'm not violently opposed to the idea so it's done and I'm sure we'll have a great time and that normal emotional service will be resumed after my period passes.

You Europeans make me sick. "Oh, drats, we're just going to have to hop over to France. Or maybe Germany. In the summer I guess it'll be Sweden again." My closest country is a third world hidden despot where cops will steal your car and sell it back to you. And there are skanks, to a caliber probably unheard of in France. Reference 'Donkey Show'

have you been coveting other bottoms while my back was turned?

No, wait, that didn't mean to come out like that...

If you're bored with France, I'll gladly use your ticket :) But that implies going on holiday with Z. myself, and don't think either of you would go for that!

i am bored with france, but really sunlight anywhere entertains me and I'll sacrifice more exotic holiday destinations for holidays with loved ones.

i was just feeling terribly sad yesterday, i'm better now.

your brilliance is indeed without compare!

but if it enlivens your working day I can give you a ring if you like and pretend I have urgent situations about lack of cabs.

The best secrets in travel are places that aren't on a map or sold to you through a travel agency. I mean sure I'd love to go to Paris or London or Prague but frankly it feels like a big 'tourisy' trip where you see what they want you to see. I'm not fond of big cities anyway since I lived in NYC most of my life.

I'm winging a trip this weekend. All I did was buy a round trip ticket to Sweden. I'll worry about everything else when I hit the ground. It can't be that bad right? But do laugh if you hear about a tourist who froze to death sleeping on the streets of Stockholm.

Unless while in Prague you skip out on all the cultural stuff and just go visit the Museum of Medieval Torture Devices.

I'll worry about everything else when I hit the ground.

Just make sure you bring some stout coats just in case.

It can't be that bad right?

I'm sure it will all be fine, except for the prices of things.

I look forward to reading about your adventures if when you get back you can get your frostbitten fingers to work... ;)

Also completely unrelated...
Hola...I'm fairly certain I know you from Bus...unless I'm very much mistaken and have been the victim of a conspiracy of bizzare coincidences.

Anyways long time no see, hoping all is well...

Matt :)
