Today, turned 97.

She is still remarkably spritely, and fit of body and sharp of mind despite subsisting on a diet that normal people would get a coronory just from thinking about and treating use-by dates as mere suggestions. It could well be that evil keeps you in good shape. As such I shall certainly consider it for my own golden age.

She's turning into a minor celebrity, seeing how she remembers all sorts of events from the beginning of the century such as Tsarist Russia, and her own family's flight and exile from Russia in 1917 and all sorts of other things that send historians into throes of ecstasy so they've been coming to interview her and begging her to talk, and publishing segments of her recollections.

And whatever else one might say about my grandmother she's quite a character, and as difficult as she undeniably is she's also had a deeply deeply tragic life (she's buried all her family including parents, siblings, husband, both children) and a lonely one, so I hope that she's had a pleasant birthday at least.

For my part I got released from work early on account of having a migraine and looking wretched, fell into a deep deep coma at home and woke up just in time for futher Raindancing with Coffee and Cigarettes . This was an excellent, excellent movie - lots of hilarious cameos and it was an absolute joy from beginning to end.
