3 weeks and no insanity

I'm terrific, aside from the week-long Mysterious Headache that's been shadowing me for reasons unknown (not enough water? too much delicious raspberry chocolate truffle cake? the Universe's nefarious ploy to keep me away from the internet?)

Z and I are continuing to point out the baby's features to one another in hushed and reverential tones (lest Hubris gets wind of it, and causes her to acquire a sudden personality change) - all: "Look! It sleeps several hours in a row!" "Look! It is awake and not screaming!" (In fact, when she does scream she seems to tire of it fairly quickly, which is probably not good news for her Operatic Career, but is doing wonders for my mental health).

When Matei was born and wouldn't stop crying, I kept joking that it was like he had incarnated here straight from Vietnam and was all preset to "The horror, the horror!". If so, then Helena has spent her past life in some Dickensian poorhouse and has come out with low expectations of life, because this child can be made to agree to go to sleep hungry*.

In other news:

I am glad I am not the only one who resents my partner for spurious reasons

Me: (Waking Z up) Baby, please help me look for my glasses. I get a massive headache without them.

Z: (resentfully) I was having a dream that I was playing a trumpet. I was playing "Summertime". And it sounded good. And then you woke me.

From my Muffin Top, to Your Face

Helena has been putting on roughly a pound a week since birth which means that a) she has outgrown her 0-3 month clothes and b) I have been losing roughly the same amount of weight.

The Man Disease starts early

Matei, to my mother holding up a scratched finger: I think I have been wounded.

Useful Distinctions

Matei, on the phone to me: Mummy, a baby is small! Which means it doesn't know how to talk, or walk, or put tomatoes on a fork.

News Just In

I have just surprised an innocent Delivery person by opening the door while wearing (t-shirt, underwear and a baby over my shoulder). In my defence - I wasn't expecting any deliveries and I thought it was Z coming back for keys he had forgotten. Hopefully we have all learned from this experience.

Signs

I love Nothing But Bonfires for three reasons:

1. Her website is light, and nice, and pretty.
2. She kind of reminds me of my sister.
3. She does cool crafty things, like this.

Me, to Z: Hey, we should do this! We should make a large sign for our house. What do you think it should say?
Z: Take all cups and plates to the kitchen.

Also, if you have been delightful enough to send me email then know that:

- I appreciate it. Thank you, it was lovely of you!
-I am answering them with glacial slowness.
- I am sorry about that.
-But I will get to it, I promise! Someday. Possibly when Helena starts school.

And finally here are some gratuitous baby pictures, of Helena's first bath and my temporary, but awesome, breastfeeding bosoms.

*Although I don't make a practise of starving her, it's handy she'll do this occasionally when breastfeeding is very inconvenient.

Forget 'man disease'... Matei is going to make a great stand-up comedian.

I confess that I find him hilarious with his very literal thinking and serious delivery.

Helena is beautiful! I can never get bored of baby photos - more please!

And Matei is definitely a comedian in the making.

Matei makes me howl with laughter constantly. Especially because he is so serious most of the time and when we laugh he usually has no idea what was funny but joins in delightedly anyway.

She sure is a pretty baby! I am glad that this time around is so much easier (and no, it probably won't change at least not until she's a teenager).

Keep the pics up, it fills my need to look at cute babies.
