Blame Canada

Canada has elected its first Conservative Prime Minister since like A Long Long Time.

What's that all about?* (But if The Liberals were tainted with corruption that kind of explains it)

waywardpixie, concordantnexus, sparktastic- thoughts?

I learn of this because The Office Administrator has been singing Blame Canada for a good five minutes now.

*Although hurray for no majority in The Commons, and who knows they might not be all bad and extreme.

No worries here. :-)

Their minority is slimmer than the Liberals' was - and that minority government fell after a year. So that's a very short leash that we've got on them.

It's about time that a Westerner (or anyone that wasn't from Quebec) got elected as PM anyway. This is Canada after all and everyone gets their turn, eventually, even the Conservatives.

Harper acknowledged as much during what is widely considered to be quite the Prime Ministerial speech on election night. Harper is not Bush and although he wants to patch things up with the Americans (we have to live beside them after all and they are our number trade partner), he is also smart enough that he can't give too much or be seen as giving away too much.

Frankly, I expect that the Conservatives stay in power for 1-2 years before some of their more outspoken members mouth off enough to shoot the party in both feet.

One shot in the feet will likely be the same sex marriage stance - more radical/conservative members might call for a free-vote on the matter which Harper would probably have to allow, so as to show that he's not riding rough-shod over his party like Martin used to. I expect that motion to lose in Commons and if not there in the Senate and if not there be quashed by our Supreme Court. At any rate, if the issue does surface in Commons, it will haunt the Conservatives like a spectre, all the way until the conclusion of the next election.

In the meantime, I'm really hoping that the Conservatives and NDP and more conscientious Liberal backbenchers team up and give us some form of proportional representation voting system instead of the archaic first-past-the-post system that we're using right now.

Bottom line, ask me again if I am worried around the time the next election is called. ;)

Thank you for that response - it has given me much food for contemplation.

I have this deep down belief that Canada is just too reasonable at its core to descend into psychosis in the way other countries oft do.
